The 2007 Independence Day Burger Grill-Off

unclesamburger.jpgShanghaiist is teaming up with City Diner to throw the city's biggest and baddest 4th of July party — held, naturally, on the 1st of July (a Sunday) at City Diner's Hongmei Lu location. You don't have to be an American to get in — non-Americans who enjoy food, drink, music, fun and fireworks (along with some friendly competition) are encouraged to attend!

The party will be held outside, from 12 noon to sundown. Highlights include:

  • "Best Burger in Shanghai" competition — taste and vote on all of the entries!
  • Live music (performers yet to be determined)
  • Fun and games
  • Lucky draw/raffle with plenty of prizes
  • Fireworks at sunset
  • All the sliders (mini hamburgers) you can eat
  • Free flow of beer, sangria and soda
  • And finally, plenty of good natured trash talkin'!

Entry to the party is RMB 150 per person. We suggest you come hungry (and thirsty).

Perhaps you want to up the ante a bit, however. We are still looking for teams interested in competing for the title of "Best Burger in Shanghai." Think you've got what it takes? Here are the rules. (You can download an entry form here.)

The City Diner Burger Grill Off is open to all restaurants, corporations and individuals/families. Prizes will be awarded for:

• First, Second and Third Place
• People’s Choice
• Most Creative Burger
• Best Team Spirit (Tent Decorations/Uniforms)

To further guarantee you bragging rights with your buddies, the First Place Burger will be featured on the City Diner menu for a period of 6 months!

City Diner will provide each team of up to 4 people the following:

• communal BBQ Area and BBQ utensils
• individual tents and tables for plating
• mini hamburger buns and all standard condiments
• BBQ area/tent stalls available for set up from 10:00am the day of the event

Each Team will be responsible for supplying:

• 7.5kg of your own marinated or non-marinated hamburger mix – beef, chicken, pork, lamb, sausage, chorizo (dare we say veggie…?)
• hamburger patties should be 50 grams each or roughly the size of a golf ball
• your own super secret special toppings, sauces or fixings!

"All the sliders (mini hamburgers) you can eat"

Have fun getting fatter Americans!

yes, you are exactly right. americans are the only people in the world who eat hamburgers. americans are the only people in the world who have all-you-can-eat specials. and, of course, america is the only country in the world with overweight people.

you are completely right, you idiot.

"Have fun getting fatter Americans!"

I wouldn't mind finding a fatter American of my own.

Learn to use commas, idiot.

Read any good books lately anony?!

As an Englishman I shall not be celebrating this so-called independence day, but rather mourning another loss to our great empire and masturbating over a photo of Queen Victoria.

"In 2005, US fast food chain Hardee's started selling the Monster Thickburger - a 1420-calorie hamburger with two 1/3-pound slabs of Angus beef, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese, mayonnaise and 107 grams of fat."

Add in a 'regular' (the World: 20 fries; USA: 20 potatoes-worth of fries) portion of fries, a small (the World: 300ml; USA: 3 liters) coke and your looking at the American dream.

Sorry, facts and your eyes dont lie - Americans are by comparison FAT, even the ones you call 'slim' (e.g. 5ft10, 180 pounds). And no, that extra weight is not muscle in 95% of Americans, it's fat. Bad food, bad diet, addicted to cars and the couch.... FAT.

Have a great weekend! :D

Hey Bob, interesting comment. How about some sales figures of this Monster Thickburger? Thanks!

oh cool! searching google for fattest nation gives a result as to how mexico will soon be the fattest nation on earth, how britain is the fattest nation in Europe (not as good as America's title, but something to be proud of!) and how Australia is coming in too for the title!
I would post links, but the comments here don't allow it!

In case you're too lazy to google, maybe cause you're Australian and eating?
"Research in Australia indicates that the country is on its way to overtaking the United States as the fattest nation in the world"

"Mexico is set to overtake the United States as the world's fattest nation in the near future."

"Britain is the fattest country in Europe"

All I know is, come July 4th, if those burgers have bacon on it... it had damn well better be crispy. And if it's crispy... I'm so there.

junior reid's cover of eleanor rigby always kills it, but here's a few hundred more to sort through:

www.iro.umontreal.ca/~ratib/beatles/songs.htm

eh, lazy navigating. that comment was meant for the beatles' cover songs, although any of them may work equally as well at the burger-off.

oops.

Any chance of the french fries being cooked in pure lard? Now THAT's America baby, and we'll make poms drink cold light beer to boot!

leave it to the americans to throw their national burger party on canada's national holiday (july the 1st). what was wrong with july 4th?

look at a calendar sarasita. july 4th is a wednesday. not the best day for a boozefest. i'll be at city diner. i know more than a couple fellow canadians who, believe it or not, like burgers, beer and even listen to music. all this anti-america crap is so tired, but very predictable.

That's really interesting Bob. now tell me if you actually know anyone who has ever even BEEN to a Hardee's.

Why do so many blog commenters generalize Americans as one homogeneous group when the United States is the most multi-cultured country in the world? It's bad enough we have to share our country with so many uneducated, white-trash, tubs of shit -- please don't assume every American is one. I prefer you focus your rancor on Shitty Diner...

Shame on Shitty Diner for using Independence Day to promote gross consumerism and bad health. All you can eat and drink fat and sugar!

anony, T, are you suggesting Hardee's have no customers? Pretty shitty business model, that! America is FAT, admit it. I've never seen so many enormous to gargantuan arses in my life as in God's country.

Bob, have you ever been to a beach in Thailand that is popular with Scandinavians? Jesus Christ, those 45+ year old Swedish Hulk Hogan wannabes with the 80's bandanas and lame sunglasses and Harley Davidson motorcycles are some of the fattest people I've ever seen. It honestly looks like their chests are on the verge of bursting, and it doesn't help that many of them have heart-related surgery scars right down the middle of their chests.

Anony, what's that got to do with the fact that America is FAT? There are enormous arses on all ages too, not just 45+.

I was just showing how easy it is to generalize a whole continent (America is a continent, two kind of, United States is a country, dumbfuck). It was so easy to judge and form opinions on a whole culture in my last post. It didn't require any thinking at all, which is why you must be so good at it, Bob.

Blah blah blah blah.

I dont understand why american cannot do better food than an hamburger, here in shanghai u see them eating at some pub , many fat people eating this unhealty food.... I dont get why .... you dont have something better to eat?

A perfectly grilled hamburger is absolutely delicious. And while unhealthy, usually it's the cheese / bason / fries that piles on the calories.

Most likely China you have never had a good hamburger. Go to the cook-off. As for me, I can't figure out why Chinese haven't stopped eating chicken feet (and assorted other fringe body parts) now that they are not on starvation diets anymore, but I guess each to their own.

Sorry Chan about calling you China. I'm out of it today.

Who really gives a shit. If you don't agree with the Independence Day Burger Grill-Off, DON'T GO. As for me; I'm looking forward to some good food, cold beer, and good times with my countrymen.

Can't wait for the BIGGEST, the BEST,the RICHEST, the most POWERFUL....US burgers in Shanghai looking foward :)

Happy Fourth of July US of A!!!!

What's the difference between Canada and USA anyway. Different dog, same leg action. You look the same, sounds the same, eat the same, consume the same.

I will go along just to take photos of fatties.
