Shanghaiist is part of the Gothamist LLC which owns and operates the most popular network of city blogs on the Internet today. Founded in 2003 and led by our NYC flagship site Gothamist.com, the network includes fourteen websites in five countries, each covering local news, events, food, and entertainment for an avid audience of young urbanites. Driven entirely by word-of-mouth, the network has grown year-over-year by more than 100%, to 7.2M monthly page views in July 2007. Shanghaiist has become an alternative media force to be reckoned with, in Shanghai and around China. With an average of 5,000 unique readers everyday, it is one of the most popular English-language China blogs on the Internet.
Internship position: Editorial intern
Shanghaiist is looking for interns with a keen interest in journalism, new media and blogging. They must possess excellent people skills, great phone etiquette and a talent for producing crisp, concise copy. Interns will be expected to possess a wide variety of interests as Shanghaiist covers a wide spectrum of life in Shanghai/China, including: arts, culture, sports, music, food, parties, events, business, human rights, politics, environment, LGBT issues, religion, technology, etc.QUALIFICATIONS:
• Basic reporting experience
• Experience in writing and maintaining a blog
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn the workings of the Movable Type blog software
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn basic HTML
• Familiarity with or willingness to operate Adobe Photoshop, or some other picture editing software
• Good aesthetic sense
• An excellent command of grammar, spelling, punctuation and style
• Extremely detail oriented, organized, able to work under deadlines
• Proficiency in Mandarin, though not required, will be a plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Fact-checking, copy-editing of stories submitted by our team of freelance contributors
• Research on the internet
• Pitching of new story ideas
• Conducting of interviews
• Representing Shanghaiist at parties, events and launches
• Liaison with PR and media contacts
• Coordination with ad sales / event executives
• Assistance with event planning
The Shanghaiist Internship promises to be a rewarding experience as interns will:
• Gain exposure into all aspects of online publishing
• Gain understanding of the benefits and concerns of reader interactivity
• Gain familiarity with daily news cycle and the ability to demonstrate solid editorial judgment
• Be expected to not just write blog posts but also have the opportunity to take over some editorial responsibilities
• Graduate with a portfolio of bylines that will aid in future employment in the industry

What We Can Offer You

We edit the content of posts sparingly, and you won't be pigeonholed into doing any one thing for us –– say, only writing about music –– unless that's what you want. (Having said that though, we do have a pretty urgent need for contributors to take care of the following segments –– Arts, Fashion, Parties, and Sports).

What We're Looking For In A Contributor
Talent. You're really good at what you do. You love sharing information with the people around you. You understand that quality always trumps quantity. You have your ear to the ground and know when cool and interesting stuff is happening.
Commitment. You should be able to contribute quality work consistently and regularly. We're looking for people who can post, in the very least, two times a week. And if you have agreed to take ownership of a certain segment or column, you will not flake out on us.
Enthusiasm. You really, really, really care about Shanghai, and you really, really, really want to write for us.
Speed. Uh...not the drug. You should be able to write (or photograph or illustrate or what have you) quickly without being sloppy. And you learn quickly and don't have trouble adapting to changes.

What We Want When You Apply
Tell us about yourself. We want to know about you! What are your interests? How long have you been in Shanghai? Do you already keep a blog? What are some of the blogs you read? Do you know something about Shanghai or China that no one else does? Do you have a special network of contacts that will give you access to a certain type of stories?
Some post ideas. We're trying to get a sense of the kind of work you'd do for us. If you were on Shanghaiist staff right away, what would you post about? Is there any one thing that you specialize in covering, or are you multi-talented? What new ideas and new kinds of content can you bring to Shanghaiist? Would you want to write a regular column or have a regular feature?
Some samples of what you do. We want to get a feel for your style. Your blog (or online writing/drawing/photo portfolio, or Flickr account, etc.) works, as do clippings. If you've never written something that you think would fit on Shanghaiist, that's cool too –– write us an example post.
