Danny did it! (four times, too)
Danny Way proved that he's the baddest man on a skateboard Saturday, jumping over the Great Wall not once, not twice, not thrice -- but four times. (He may have gone over more times after that, but the Chinese television broadcast we were watching ran out of time.) Why not quit after the first successful run, in which he simultaneously broke his own skateboarding world records for distance (79ft/24.07m) and unaided height out of a ramp (23.5ft/7.14m)? Because of a "grudge" against a quarter pipe.
While Way stuck all four landings after flying over the Wall, he never quite nailed his second landing -- the one that came after getting some huge air off of the quarter pipe on the landing side of the Wall. Each time, Way limped back over to the MegaRamp like a warrior and climbed 10 stories to the top to do it all over again. Way severely sprained an ankle during a practice run on Friday, and looked more battered and bruised with each jump on Saturday.
Shanghaiist was unable to get the live feed to work from dannydoeschina.com, but found the right channel on Chinese television to watch the event. We snapped some very rudimentary photos of the TV screen. We also took a two-minute video clip of the TV during his fourth run, but the video doesn't appear to have been verified by Google Video yet (UPDATE: Here's the video -- we got tired of waiting on Google). They will likely have some much, much better quality clips over at dannydoeschina.com soon.
Shamus was actually at the Wall for the event, and plans on posting something as soon as he can find a computer and an internet connection -- the media area at the event was rather bare bones. But what do you expect at an ancient wall?
