Animal Welfare Law in China: Are we there yet?

anticrueltypixelated.jpgFor days, Shanghaiist has been thinking of new and creative ways to curse the high-heeled kitten killer, even though she made an insincere apology, our anger has not ceased. Because no laws against animal cruelty exist in China, the bitch got off scott free.

So what happens next? What should we do if some idiot does this again? (Oh wait. It already has happened again. There is another series of captured images on the internet showing a kitten killed by a young woman, a different one -- a copycat kitten killer. We won't provide the link because it was even more gruesome than the first series, which, if you ever see a link to, DON'T FOLLOW IT. The photos will haunt you.)

Now this Xinhua story (in Chinese) may shed some light on our concerns. According to the Hainan Animal Protection Association (forum in Chinese), Hainan Province is going to announce the first animal welfare law in China at the end of the year. China has a wildlife protection law, but obviously with more Chinese enjoying the company of animals as pets, and some even treating them as family members, the exposure of animal abuse cases is motivating some lawmakers to enact a bill on animal abuse in China.

The first animal welfare law -- which may only be good in Hainan (but it is a step in the right direction) -- is said to set rules for the treatment and welfare of livestock, animals used in experiments, "companion" animals, working animals, entertainment animals and wildlife. The animal welfare law is suppose to raise citizens’ awareness on protecting basically all kinds of animals.

We don't want to see any more appalling animal abuse pictures -- but let's just hope the push for an animal welfare law won't be suspended yet again.

Hey folks, could you please get the pictures of the dead cats off the website. Or have somebody else post a few - I keep seeing that kitten's open mouth every time I load Shanghaiist and it's really depressing. Oh, and I think that women should get the death penalty. Crushed by giant stilletos. Or thrown to that poor panther in its Hongqiou Zoo cubicle. God that would be great.

Very sorry about that. I didn't look closely before. Should be better now.

I AGREE WITH YOU. THIS WOMEN NEEDS TO BE FINED $5,000.00 AND GET A JAIL TERM OF 5 YEARS MIN. WITH NO PAROLE. OR THERE COULD JUST BE A DEATH PENALTY. THE LAWS ARE GOING TO CHANGE IN CHINA SOON. WITH ALL THE ANIMAL ACTIVIST HERE IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS OTHER SICK PERSON IS FOUND. I HOPE SOMEONE DOES THE SAME TO HER/HIM. ANIMALS ARE PART OF OF WORLD AND HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT AND DESERVE TO BE HERE IN HAMONY WITH US. WE ARE TO BIG NOW FOR THESE HEARTLESS ABUSERS TO GO SCOTT FREE. MAYBE THE ANIMALS ACTIVIST WILL TAKE THE LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS BEFORE ONE IS IMPLEMENTED. I PRAY THIS SICK PERSON WILL BE FOUND AND SOON BEFORE ANYMORE BLESSED BEINGS ARE TORTURED. HEY, SOON WE CAN DRIVE OUT THE LIVE DOG AND CAT MARKETS TO. THEY ARE NO BETTER THAN THESE PEOPLE CAUSING DEATH. ALSO, LETS REMEMBER THAT ONE WHO CAUSES DEATH TO A ANIMAL WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM KILLING A CHILD OR ADULT. I WILL PRAY FOR THE ANIMALS ACTIVST. GOD'S ANGELS WILL GUIDE THEM TO VICTORY!!

I'm suprised that people haven't heard of the phenomena of 'crush' pornography beofre. It's been around for a long time, and not just in China. The concept is that a woman wearing high heels (or any kind of fetishistic shoe) crushes an animal to death - anything from crickets, to mice, to kittens.

Not that I'm trying to defend it. It's utterly disgusting, and more than that, perplexing. What could be less erotic than a squashed toad?

I just wanted to point out that this is by no means an isolated incident.

guys, if you want to do something about this then be active in the animal welfare of shanghai and the surrounds. if you need some direction on where to go to start. how about SCAA. you can visit the website on www.scaashanghai.org
yes, she deserves everything she gets, even if it is only being ostracised in her local community. but more people need to be active in improving animal welfare for the government to take notice sooner. central governemnt is aware that there is a problem and they are working towards animal welfare legislation, so they say. let's hope it comes to fruition before this happens again.

There is actually a tracking story on the underground group who is running the whole thing, this woman is just used as a slaughter, although she is still guilty and definitely deserves a death penalty. I remember I read a recent local report says those "crush scums" actually suggested to buy an infant to satisfy their needs. Psychologcial study also shows animal abusers are also able to harm other humans. Let's hope the government is aware of this serious issue.

Further to my previous comment: these films get made in Europe and America too. Sometimes legislation is not enough to stop the occasional rogue pervert.

I hope that bring that witch in judugement what she done to kitten so cruel reason. She better lost her eye like. How she feel if other person crash her eye with heel.

Hi. All,

Please take a look at today's video on this link

media.smh.com.au

Sorry that I had to type it this way, or it would not be allowed.

You will be shocked to see how cruel the way animals are being treated in China and to know that there is still long way before most people in China can understand the differences between entertainment and horroric + inhumane treatments of animals.

William

I FEEL SO SADLY FOR THESE ANIMALS, WHO CAN'T EVEN DEFEND THEMSELVES, ALL THEY WANT IS TO BE LOVED AND WANTED. WHY DO THESE SICK PEOPLE CONTINUE TO TORTURE THESE ANIMALS, MUST MEAN THEY CAN HURT A HUMAN BEING, I WISH I WAS THERE TO STAND UP FOR THESE ANIMALS, TO SET THEM FREE,BUT I'D PROBABLY END UP DEAD AS WELL. I BEGIN TO THINK MAYBE THEY CONTINUE THIS BECAUSE THEY HATE AMERICA,THEY JUST HATE US. LOOK FOR ANOTHER HOBBY FOR GODS'SAKE, GO GET SOME PHYCHIATRIC HELP. AS FOR THE CRUSHING OF ANIMALS BY STANDING ON THEM, THAT IS HORRIFIC. LET'S SET THESE ANIMALS FREE, LET THEM LIVE HAPPILY. LET'S BE FRIENDS AND LIVE IN PEACE. BECAUSE AFTER ALL THERE IS ANOTHER LIFE WAITING FOR ALL OF US. AND THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN EVIL WILL PAY. FOR EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL OUT THERE,BEING TORTURED BY THESE PEOPLE, I'M WITH YOU. I'M CRYING FOR YOU. I WISH I WAS THERE TO SAVE YOU.
