Western scoundrel returns: Chinabounder is back!
You may remember (one of) 2006's big Chinese internet controversies regarding the alleged British male English teacher blogging about allegedly bonking Shanghai's finest, the enraged response from China's self-styled moral guardian Dr. Zhang Jiehai, and the subsequent online-witch hunt for the alleged perpetrators?
Well, get ready for round two. Chinabounder's blog, Sex and Shanghai / 欲望上海, is back. In his first entry since the height of Chinabounder-gate, he's fired a broadside at the Chinese internet mob and the apparent inconsistencies with the focus of its ire. In his writing, he cites the cases of young Chinese students who were beaten to death by teachers, and the alleged silence of China's internet community about these events. After illustrating the case of Zhang Yaoyi whose death coincided with the time of the Chinabounder controversy, he wrote:
And where were all you frothing lunatics then? Where were the witchhunts then? Where was the anger and the outrage? Where were the frenzied press reports? Where were the blog sites calling for this guy’s head? One Western man has sex with a bunch of women. Women who are adults, who consent freely, and who enjoy it thoroughly. He writes about it, throws in a few run-of-the-mill opinions. Behavior nothing special. Thoughts little new.
We wonder what Zhang Jiehai will have to say about this, in particular as he has recently announced the release of his account of the Chinabounder saga. One thing we are sure of is that this controversy won't be put to bed any time soon.
