Depends on where you are -- there are also people that ride around and tell people to watch out for thieves or turn the gas off when they're sleeping

1 week, 2 days ago

They're usually telling you to bring out your unwanted computers and other electrical goods which they cart away and get paid money for at a scrapyard. They often mention fridges too, although i'm yet to see someone carting one around on their bike.

I think that's what they're saying anyway. My listening isn't too great so they could just be proclaiming the apocalypse

1 week, 4 days ago

what do the people riding around on bikes with a megaphone and tape recorder playing a loud message on repeat actually say? Are they selling something, promoting a service, preaching allegiance to the Party or announcing the End of Times?

Just wondering.

Protesters block construction trucks in Jing An District. This morning, several dozen older residents of an old complex on Feng Yuan Rd, across from the now defunct Frankies and Trader Vic's, were organizing a Sit-down protest blocking the path of several large "blue trucks of death". It seems the planned construction of yet another skyscraper on the 600 block of nanjing West Rd will entirely block in the old community, removing almost all access to sunshine for residents who live there. The local PSB was there passively surveying and negotiating with the residents as this ShnaghaiExpat came across the scene. Sorry didn';t have a camera so no pics.

Phoenix TV: The Running Teacher "morally corrupt"?
This is not the first time that Mr. Fan and Mr. Qing have left students without support.
Last year one of Mr. Fan's students was 'Black listed' by the International Baccalaureate (IB) for turning in a paper without the proper acknowledgement of a 'very well known quotation'.
The existing foreign Principal "Terminated" Mr. Fan over the incident for teacher malfeasance.
Mr. Qing subsequently terminated the principal and RE-HIRED Mr. Fan immediately and took over sole responsibility of the Guangya IB School himself besides being the owner. By the way Mr. Qing himself, I believe, never completed high school let alone University.
As to morally corrupt, 'the IB' places a VERY high value on "Ethical Practice" which has not been practiced apparently by either of the two.

5, Yong Fu Road SHELTER’s Bouncer beats girl. - Great lead but...

Keep dreaming. If it's not about dicks, bubble gum, drunken wackiness, and pop corn in your lollipop hole Shanghaiist isn't going to report it. It's depressing the tabloid direction this blog has taken. I'm guessing that Kenneth Tan will be stepping aside soon.

5, Yong Fu Road SHELTER’s Bouncer beats girl.
Friday June 13 -Saturday, June 14, 2008
Around 2am to 2:30am
Place : SHELTER, 5, Yong Fu road
Chinese Bouncer beats Chinese girl, 21 year old.
Strong hit into her face, knocked her on the ground.
Reason: He said: “she was talking too loudly”
She and her 2 visiting guest from Sweden: “we were talking at the gate of the shelter before entering the bar”.
The girl and her 2 friends are in fashion and model biz.
Other local and foreign guys tried to protect the girl.
The bouncer and his colleagues were fighting on.
Later the girl hitting bouncer guy ran away and disappeared.

Never heard this one happening that Bouncers hit girls. Usually they really care.

Maybe Media Shanghai should make a reportage on this and talk about SCHELTER.
Shanghai Shelter.

Re: Beijing Hair Culture in Xintiandi
I had a terrible hair cut and colour there recently, and what's more, got a wart on my ear in the process. The stylist had one on his hand and nicked my ear during the cut. I had to have laser surgery to remove it. The stylist left the salon and Beijing Hair Culture (including their HK HQ) refused to take any responsibility for the problem. These days service gets better and and better in Shanghai, so it's even more disgusting that a supposedly high-end salon treats customers so badly. Please join me in boycotting Beijing Hair Culture in protest at bad customer service!
