Pencil This In: Job Fair, Punchline Comedy, and Anniversary Celebrations

It's gonna be a good week, Shanghai. Whether you're an unemployed soul, an MBA student or a corporate drone, there's something for you to check out. And everyone can get in on the anniversary celebrations, whether your interests are professional (BEAN) or favored more towards debauchery (Antidote).

Bars: DADA opening for real now

A new Changning district bar will be rounding out a trifecta of cool places to go on Xinfu lu (the other two being, of course, established indie outposts LOgO and Anar): it's called DADA and it's the pet project of Antidote dude Michael Ohlsson.

Interview: Mopichet storms Shanghai

Mochipet joins Antidote for a China tour, hitting Shanghai's Shelter club on Saturday, Aug.15, 2009. Mochipet is a renowned electronic music producer on a world tour. His style is mad eclectic and delightfully hard to define, tongue-in-check and always ahead of the game. We swapped emails with him during a rare week of rest in his California home.

Antidote: Vietnam's Jetlag Pho-king up the Shelter

The people who brought us the absolutely awesome Antidote music festival in Zhujiajiao are now hitting up Shelter with three live music acts in one night. On Saturday, Vietnam acts JETLAG (a.k.a. MicMac vs.MauDen), and American electro indie popper Thruoutin will be rocking the space and our bodies.

Tonight: IDM Music by Length will rock and shock Shanghai

18-year-old Length, from Changsha, has promised to play something completely different from what you usually hear.

Yes, it really has taken us this long to recover from the Antidote Festival in Zhujiajiao last weekend. And just in time to catch the Antidote gang down at C's tonight as well. As much as we love C's, it probably isn't quite as atmospheric as the venue chosen for last weekend's festival - in the garden of one of Zhujiajiao's old houses.

Around Shanghai: Antidote, drawing on buildings, and news about the China Pavilion

  • China youth market blog enoVation labs went to the Antidote Electronic Music Fest in Zhujiajiao over the weekend... and they loved it! [enoVation]
  • The former VP of mega-conglomerate Shanghai Huayi Group is now on trial in Shanghai on charges that he embezzled 57 million RMB, took 8.35 million RMB in bribes and illegally acquired 17.25 million RMB in assets. [Shanghai Daily]
  • Several artists teamed up to paint a partially demolished building near the Moganshan Road art district. Unfortunately, as soon as it was done, it got peed on. [56minus1]

There's some excellent bands in town this weekend (and we'll talk about them later), but there's also a couple of great reasons to head out of the city and catch some top music.

Catch the ticket bird for the Antidote Electronic Music Festival

Yes, we know we just went through one festival, but we can't help getting a little psyched for the next one already.

Triple trouble: more festivals coming your way

So you thought Midi was the only festival game in town? Think again. Three music events - all festivals of a sort - covering three different types of music are heading your way in the next month or so. Yes, we know one of them is related to Expo, but World Music has the right to a festival too and bringing in those kind of artists was never going to escape Haibao's reach this close to 2010. We'll have more details on all of these nearer the time but, for now, here's a preview:

2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities.

A highly respected African-American DJ and producer, from the most influential city in the history of electronic music, has criticized the ranking system which is used by many clubs in China, particularly Shanghai, when deciding which DJs to bring to the country, as being useless.

Our favourite club The Shelter has been told to close its doors until September 6, apparently in a bid to improve security for the Olympics (660 miles away).

Any fan of electronic music in China has heard of Antidote. Headed by DJ Ozone, aka Michael Ohlsson, Antidote is a crew of electronic musicians and DJs based in Shanghai. This Thursday April 17th at The Shelter, they're introducing a new party-as-concept: City Sound Sessions. Michael explains.

It's been a while, but this Sunday will see a welcome return for the PAUSE collective, who will be bringing their heady mix of independent art, music, and creative stalls to everyone's favourite ex-Blue Ice hang out, The Shelter. Kicking off at 4pm down on Yong Fu Lu, there will be a bunch of inventive things to get excited about, featuring contributors from across the globe and, of course, the cream of Shanghai's arts scene.

Or where we’re going after we’ve seen Hedgehog live that is. As Shanghaiist told you yesterday, one of Beijing’s best bands will be hitting Yu Yin Tang tonight as part of their China tour and they are well worth checking out (not least for a chance to see possibly the world’s smallest drummer, Atom, who also used to be in Hang on the Box). Not only that, but Hedgehog will be supported by one of Shanghai's finest bands, Hardqueen.

For a second straight week Shanghaiist has missed our Friday deadline, oops. The good news is that Saturday is when all the really good stuff happens.

This coming Saturday, Antidote will be hosting Knifehandchop from Toronto and Sulumi from Beijing. Antidote organiser Michael Ohlsson aka DJ Ozone explains why he invited the two DJ's:These guys are producers, not just DJs. I've always been interested in music that is current, innovative, cutting-edge ... but also accessible. Not just experimental noise. And I love to share this new music with people. The music that Sulumi and KnifeHandChop are doing is very different from...
