Interview: Pho-ntastic French beatmaker Onra

Maybe you've never heard of Onra or Arnaud Bertrand but you may actually recognize one of his songs, "The Anthem", which was featured in a Coca Cola ad for the Beijing Olympics starring 3D animated versions of Yao Ming and LeBron James.

Pencil This In: Live jazz, electro at Shelter, and Shanghai Shenhua vs. Chongqing Lifan

This week: Chill out with some live jazz, rock out with some funky beats at Shelter, then cheer on Shanghai Shenhua before eating some good ol' American grub at the Bulldog.

Last Friday at Yuyintang, Nosaj Thing shone in his beat-heavy live set laced with synth sounds and slaps amid an obvious underlying hip hop influence. He worked the Akai Mpd-32 controller, laptop and audio interface and yes the crowd lapped it up.

Tonight: IDM Music by Length will rock and shock Shanghai

18-year-old Length, from Changsha, has promised to play something completely different from what you usually hear.

Interview: Nosaj Thing

Nosaj Thing, a.k.a. Jason Cheung, is a L.A.-based music producer whose geeky charm at first sight deceptively conceals his sinister and innovative musical agendas. At the age of 13, he molded his father's rudimentary PC that struggled with even Word documents into a Frankestein Intel Celeron home studio.

Party all the time: Phreaktion turns 10 with Andy C.

DnB promoters Phreaktion are celebrating their 10th year in Asia on Friday (they blew the candles out on their 3rd year in Shanghai last November) and to make sure this birthday's extra-special, they've booked the biggest name in Drum and Bass - Andy C.

Catch the ticket bird for the Antidote Electronic Music Festival

Yes, we know we just went through one festival, but we can't help getting a little psyched for the next one already.

Interview: Reptile and Retard studying abroad at the Shelter

Within two months of their arrival to Shanghai, Mads Damsgaard Kristiansen and Esben Valloe (i.e. Reptile and Retard) have managed to score an Antidote-sponsored headlining gig at The Shelter.

Ratatat coming to Shanghai in May?

Ratatat - whose song we once featured here against a backdrop of Spring Festival fireworks - may be gracing Shanghai with its presence this Spring. According to local concert promoters S.T.D., the Brooklyn-based indie electro-music duo will play on May 21 at Zhijiang Dream Factory, along with Wuhan dance punk group AV Okubo. Ratatat has toured with the likes of Björk, Daft Punk, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, The Faint and The Killers, and have produced remixes of songs by The Knife, Television Personalities and Animal Collective. Check out their Myspace.

Up-and-coming electronic hip-hop producer Dorian Concept, otherwise known as Oliver Thomas Johnson, will take to the stage come this Thursday at The Shelter. Having developed his own distinctive twisted sound, the 24-year-old Austrian has just released his debut LP and performed at this year's Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards a few weeks back.

In their first show of the year, the Shanghai's underground house and techno crew, Void, take a break from hosting the likes of Underground Resistance, Robert Hood, DJ Bone and Neil Landstrumm to showcase their own residents with a live, improvised decks and drum machine performance.

2008 Anno Domini / Year of the Rat will be remembered as a difficult one for China in general. Its effects were felt by all, including those involved in Shanghai's numerous musical scenes. It was a year in which artists, promoters and fans had to deal with even more obstacles and barriers than usual in their quest to generate culture and make the whole metropolis live up to its reputation as one of Asia's most dynamic and happening cities.

We are pretty sure more than a few people are thankful that Mark Pritchard didn't pursue a culinary career in the end. The pioneering DJ, currently with cutting edge label Warp Records, has since moved on from his critically-acclaimed deep ambient music to the dark synthetic bass bleeps of Detroit-inspired instrumental hip hop.

A highly respected African-American DJ and producer, from the most influential city in the history of electronic music, has criticized the ranking system which is used by many clubs in China, particularly Shanghai, when deciding which DJs to bring to the country, as being useless.

Seems like it's that time of year. First, Void celebrated their one-year anniversary last month. Now Phreaktion, fronted by DJ Siesta, turns three. It's just more proof that drum and bass is not only here, but here to stay. So this weekend, they're giving you the presents by featuring Goldie and DJ Krust over two action-packed nights.

In the past year, local techno strongmen Void have proven to be anything but. They've consistently rocked venues like LoGo and The Shelter every month, bringing one techno legend after another (see: Robert Hood, Traxx, etc). So it's only fitting that they celebrate their first birthday with not one, but TWO notable techno artists.

Barely two weeks after their successful first event, FREE the WAX will bring in multi-instrumentalist hip hop duo, Hermitude (Elefant Traks) tonight from down under for a show at The Shelter.

Last night's gig was much welcomed after a long drought in Shanghai's experimental/ indie electronic music scene (think DJ Krush back in December 2006), judging by the large turnout ready to party on a week night. Daedelus, outlandishly dandy as ever with massive sideburns (that would do well to give Gaz Coombes a run for his money), certainly did not disappoint.

It's getting later in the month, which means it must be time for another Void techno extravaganza at The Shelter. Continuing the "Techno Pioneer" theme from Robert Hood's slamming set in June, this month the boys are flying in Traxx for a nonstop four-hour set of house & techno insanity.

DJ J Walk from djvibe.com played an amazing set at The Shelter last night.

Phreaktion's Sweatshop events at The Shelter have been going strong for awhile now, and this Saturday 5/31 promises to keep the momentum going. Once again, flithy drum 'n bass is on the menu. Headlining is Canada's J Walk:

J Walk, from Canadian based clubbing website djvibe.com makes his junglistic debut at Sweatshop this month. Having just returned from London, Sweatshop heads are in for a fresh tuneage treat!
Local support is from Phreaktion regulars Siesta, Viceroy, Abruzzi Spur, and MCs Didje and ChaCha.

Any fan of electronic music in China has heard of Antidote. Headed by DJ Ozone, aka Michael Ohlsson, Antidote is a crew of electronic musicians and DJs based in Shanghai. Last night, Shanghaiist traipsed out to The Wall. Getting there was a little tricky and required our cab driver to get out and ask directions twice. The address of the club might be Riverside Avenue (Binjiang Dadao), but you can access the place only via Fenghe Lu. It took us a little while to figure that out. If it helps, the venue is directly across the street from the Shanghai International Convention Center. Anyway, it's kind of cool seeing the monstrous Oriental Pearl TV Tower so close when you're in the area.

If we had a jiao for every time someone was flabbergasted at the fact that we live in Pudong then, well, we could probably buy lunch. But cool stuff does happen east of the river. And this Saturday night, Union Music DJs Steve Bamford and Carl Lorimer will prove it by hosting a night of house and breaks at The Wall. Located at U1, 2727 Riverside Avenue (浦东滨江大道2727号 广场地下1层) in Lujiazui, this swank new venue boasts a badass soundsystem, some funky seating, and "the longest bar in Asia." Best of all? No cover.
