We're still bummed out that Halloween is over, so we figured we'd stretch out the mystique of the holiday by featuring this video, shot by contributor Jeremy Breningstall, of what our terrorizing on the Zombie Walk actually looked like.

This is probably one of our favorite Chinese traditions so far: apparently lottery winners, in order to conceal their identities from the populous, dress up in costumes when receiving their fake oversized media checks. This has been going on for a while, and netizens have begun to give awards for the best costumes on Chinese forum sites. It's kind of like a taste of Halloween year round!
Here are the rest of the photos (if you're looking for the Zombie Walk stuff, check it out here. Thank you to MNO, R3, Baijiu Robot and Kidplastik for their awesome sets and that crazy live show. Thank you to Not Me for keeping up with the hundreds of people that crowded the bar. And most of all, thank you Shanghaiist readers (and friends) who helped populate a super cool, super be-costumed Halloween extravaganza.

It's going to be a pretty crazy weekend. If you're not too busy preparing your awesome costume for our Halloween party, here are some ideas to pass the time, ranging from a mustache party to a Diwali celebration to a Kung Fu show. For live music you can check out this weekend, check out our midweek music preview.
In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well... whatever catches their fancy that week. This week: Shanghai-themed costumes we'd be super psyched to see gracing our Halloween party on Saturday.
In typical Shanghai form, there are more Halloween parties this Saturday then you can count (including, of course, our bound-to-be fantabulous Rampage bash). But here's another option we'd love to endorse Shanghai LGBT’s 4th Annual Halloween Pub Crawl.
Bwahaha! As Halloween slowly draws closer and closer like a serial killer in a horror movie, Shanghaiist is putting on the scariest garb we can find for our annual, super awesome Halloween Party. If you haven't read about it (or heard about it through the grapevine), we're partnering with Not Me to offer a night packed with horror, fright, and obviously, mayhem aplenty. After all, there's gonna be a costume contest, great music by MNO, R3, Baijiu Robot and Kidplastik, and of course, a mini cityscape for the crushing! So come, or you'll be haunted by it for the rest of your life.
There are certain Western traditions that just don't quite translate - customs that the majority of Chinese people don't understand and indeed do not even try to understand because the tradition itself seems preposterous. One such ritual is Halloween. And yet that hasn't stopped the foreign population (and us!) from celebrating it.
Halloween is Shanghaiist's favorite holiday, by far. And with the spooky season approaching, we spend a lot of time thinking about whether Chinese vampires are more zombie than vampire, the mortifying merits of American style haunted houses and, of course, our annual halloween party. And like always, we're going to hold it down like a rickety door during a zombie attack.
A 107-year-old building along Suzhou Creek is alive with spirits. For a creepy experience between now and Halloween, stop by the Shanghai Nightmare Haunted House (1295 Nan Suzhou Lu, a few blocks away from the Xinzha Lu metro station).
Just because we know you can't get over how great the Shanghaiist Halloween Party was, here's another video by Jiaying and Karl Dominik of PLAY (玩转上海).
This video by our friends Luis Tapia and Peter Kirby of Daedalum Films nicely captures the mood at the legendary Shanghaiist Halloween Party last Friday. Man, still can't believe we got shot down!
So Elvira and the Pope scooped the Shanghaiist award for best Halloween costume Friday night, but if we were handing out international prizes then this would be the one to beat:
Although some guys in cop costumes did end up putting our party to bed a little earlier than planned Friday night, they didn't manage to ruin our costume contest fun. So without further ado (and with honourable mentions to the DVD Pirate, the banana and that guy in the creepy Joker/nurse outfit), the winners of 1000RMB of Sherpa's credit are:
So yes, you heard correctly. The Shanghaiist Halloween Party was shut down prematurely early this morning by the Shanghai po-po (or middle aged Chinese men with excellent costumes and very poor senses of humor). And yes, this really sucks. Shanghai's finest arrived shortly after midnight and around 1 a.m. "encouraged" the venue's management to the pull the plug, citing alleged neighborhood complaints about noise outside the entrance. Many people had to be turned away at the door, and then, down in the bomb shelter, the lights went up, the music went off, and that was eventually that. Not fun. We apologize to everyone whose night was adversely affected by this. We wish there was a way we could give you all candy or something.
Halloween.....while there are more than a few parties being held tonight, including the infamous Shanghaiist party, there is only one that gives you the chance to dress up in a crazy costume and spend the night in a sweaty, raving mosh listening to a Clash cover band, Boys Climbing Ropes (or is it Popes?) and the intense sounds of the Subs. Lucky for you there is little else happening in the way of live music this weekend, because after tonight we expect a little down time will be needed to nurse all those mosh pit bruises and hangovers.

Our friend, Jack Chen of Shanghai Studio, the wonderful guy that was responsible for all our freaky decorations during our Halloween party and the vampire that freaked quite a few of you out, shows us that his less creepy side can be just as creative with his very first personal art show of Angel art paintings. What: Jack's Angel Art Show @ Shanghai Studio Entrance: RMB50 (incl. one Tiger Beer) Free entry for everyone in...
On Saturday, Oct. 27, the same night as our Halloween extravaganza, police raided and shut down Shanghai's popular gay club, Club Deep (commonly called "Deep"). Word on the street is that some Deep patrons were indulging in some not-so-legal substances during Deep's "Decadent Halloween" party, sponsored by i-Candy. According to our sources, between 20-30 police officers (initially mistaken for costumed go-go dancers, it was a Halloween party after all) arrested around 10 people, all suspected...
After a loud and exciting Halloween, tonight is a good chance to head out, sit back and chill to the soothing tunes of The Swamp and 21G at 4Live. Alternatively, composer Mark Chan has put together a live score for the classic, silent Chinese film Little Toys and will be performing it during the film’s screening at the Shanghai Concert Hall. If you are craving excitement, then head to Live Bar where a Beijing Brit-pop...
Many thanks to Ken Yip and Jack of Shanghai Studio for the pictures. More pictures from the wonderful guys at EnjoyClassifieds here. For those of you with more pictures of people making a fool of themselves that you'd like to share with us, put them up on Flickr and tag them shanghaiist or add them on on our Facebook group (remember to tag yourself in the pictures!). There is still a wonderful video coming up so stay tuned!
Still looking for something to do for Halloween? Here are a few parties that should be worth checking out. If you are stuck hanging around People's Square head over to the MOCA where you will find (besides interesting art) a wicked Halloween party featuring lots of killer tunes from Bananas Soundsystem. For those who aren't keen on going downtown, head out to Xujiahui where Harley's Bar will host Banana Monkey and more Banana DJ music. At Logo bar 3 bands are going to dress up as the Misfits, Sex Pistols and Ramones and churn out some gnarly tunes. Billed Punks for Monks, all proceeds from ticket sales will go to a charity helping the monks in Burma.
