We're still bummed out that Halloween is over, so we figured we'd stretch out the mystique of the holiday by featuring this video, shot by contributor Jeremy Breningstall, of what our terrorizing on the Zombie Walk actually looked like.

As with most things in Shanghai, the Zombie Walk started a little later than we had planned. Still, by around 8:45pm, a good crowd of 30 to 50 people had gathered at the corner of Tianping Lu and Hengshan Lu. After making sure everyone had gotten a little yellow bracelet to signify their zombie walking prowess (and to get them into Not Me for free), Shanghaiist Editor Elaine Chow, dressed as a videogame character, rallied the troops and commenced the walk.

In our ongoing Threesday feature, Shanghaiist takes the time to count out three of well... whatever catches their fancy that week. This week: Shanghai-themed costumes we'd be super psyched to see gracing our Halloween party on Saturday.

• No worries about getting the runs while exploring the World Expo - Shanghai has been making extensive efforts to ensure that we are never far from a toilet. The city has installed toilets about every 200 meters for the estimated 400,000 daily visitors expected each day. • Looking for something culturally stimulating this week? The Tony award winning Soul of Shaolin tells the story of Hui Guang, a son and his mother. The show is a stunning display of Wushu Kung Fu that is sure to astound you. The performance starts this Thursday at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. [Smart Shanghai]
• China is planning on forming an organization of top universities called the C9 and Shanghai's very own Fudan University and Shanghai JiaoTong University will join with other prestigious schools across the nation in a Chinese "Ivy League". We wonder if they're copying this tradition for better education opportunities for their students or to increase elitism? [People's Daily]

If you're like us, you love Halloween so much that you look forward to it for weeks, dreaming about stuffing yourself with candy and scaring every man, woman and small child in your freak-out radius. But if you're really like us, then you've probably thought a LOT about your costume, but haven't taken the time to travel all the way to Party Monster for your costume, or even log on to Taobao to look for one. Well, it's high time to get on it, because our annual Shanghaiist Halloween Party will have the definitive costume contest in all of Shanghai!

In typical Shanghai form, there are more Halloween parties this Saturday then you can count (including, of course, our bound-to-be fantabulous Rampage bash). But here's another option we'd love to endorse …Shanghai LGBT’s 4th Annual Halloween Pub Crawl.

There are certain Western traditions that just don't quite translate - customs that the majority of Chinese people don't understand and indeed do not even try to understand because the tradition itself seems preposterous. One such ritual is Halloween. And yet that hasn't stopped the foreign population (and us!) from celebrating it.

Still looking for something to do for Halloween? Here are a few parties that should be worth checking out. If you are stuck hanging around People's Square head over to the MOCA where you will find (besides interesting art) a wicked Halloween party featuring lots of killer tunes from Bananas Soundsystem. For those who aren't keen on going downtown, head out to Xujiahui where Harley's Bar will host Banana Monkey and more Banana DJ music. At Logo bar 3 bands are going to dress up as the Misfits, Sex Pistols and Ramones and churn out some gnarly tunes. Billed Punks for Monks, all proceeds from ticket sales will go to a charity helping the monks in Burma.

This is your final warning!

A quick note to interrupt your last-minute Halloween costume shopping (we made our costume yesterday ... you'll definitely hear us coming) to let you know what films we plan to show at the big Shanghaiist Halloween Party on Saturday night. If you haven't been to Shanghai Studio, it's a spooky maze-like place that occupies an old bomb shelter. So if music and dancing are your things, we've got rooms for that. If chatting and drinking are your things, we've got rooms for that, too. For those of you who have "other" activities in mind, there are also plenty of dark hallways and corners for you to do your thing.

Ever thought of what you're doing to offset your carbon footprint? This Saturday, instead of driving your car or taking a taxi, why don't you try taking public transport, cycling or walking instead? Residents will be asked to avoid driving private cars within the Inner Ring Road, and while compliance is not mandatory, driving will be banned outright in some areas.

Potatoes grown from seeds that mutated in space while aboard a Chinese spacecraft are the newest culinary fad in Shanghai. This potato, dubbed the Purple Orchid Three, is supposedly going to be popular choice for upscale Valentine's Day dinners:

Several Shanghai restaurants have developed dishes using Purple Orchid Three 'space potatoes,' claiming that the unusual colour of the vegetables represents the 'nobility and romance' of Valentine's Day, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Halloween is our favorite holiday in the whole wide world -- check out the photos from Saturday night's Shanghaiist Halloween Party at Shanghai Studio and maybe you'll get an idea why. Conservative estimates say 500 to 600 people most definitely were in violation of some kind of fire code packed the bomb shelter (which Shanghaiist staff and the amazingly great people from MANifesto and Shanghai Studio turned into a dungeon for a day).

What a weekend—the Shanghaiist Halloween Party was a blast! We loved the diverse crowd and friendly vibe. (Local residents, who contacted the police about the noise, were rather less enthused.) We’ll start planning for the next event soon — when we nail down the details, we’ll be sure to let you know. Any suggestions on places to go?

We'll keep this short, because we have a bomb shelter to decorate. We're looking forward to seeing your costumes tonight!

Every couple of years, Shanghai's art and culture scene comes alive as a slew of exhibitions are organized in tandem with the Shanghai Biennale, arguably the biggest art event in the city. And every couple of years, Shanghaiist is disappointed by the various offerings. Shanghai never claimed to be the cultural center of China but one would think out of all the events and exhibitions this fall, something would get Shanghaiist excited. Instead, we can sum up this fall's art events with one word: Boring!

That quote makes a lot more sense if you have just watched the long version of Michael Jackson's Thriller video (or at least the very beginning of it) like we just did -- hard to believe it really scared us back in 1983. But please, please, please watch the spectacular Indian take on Thriller (second video above) -- and a special prize goes to the first person who arrives at the Shanghaiist Halloween Party on Saturday sporting jheri curls, a red pleather suit and Dracula teeth.

Decorations: Yep, we got 'em. Skeletons? Check. Bats? Check. Spiders? Check. Spooky sound effects? Of course.

GigShanghai: Jazz, Korean-Africani and The Dirty Three

While Shanghaiist’s mind is usually consumed with cocktails, food, and finding a costume for the AWESOME Shanghaiist Halloween Party, our mouth started watering immediately upon seeing this email from Ken Walker, the man behind Bubba’s Bar-B-Que & Saloon in Hongqiao:

Although the tattooing took place in a bar -- Shanghai Studio, which happens to be the site of the upcoming Shanghaiist Halloween Party -- the guy was not drunk at the time of the inking. In fact, he made an appointment the night before once he learned that one of Shanghai Studio's bartenders, Xiaobai (pictured), does freelance tattooing (he carries his tools, disposable needles and all, with him, and even makes house calls). He found the design on the internet -- perhaps here or here? -- and the rest is permanent history.
