Follow Team Shanghaiist on Twitter

If there's one thing that we at Shanghaiist would like to thank the Net Nanny for, it's that she's totally reunited Chinese microbloggers with the one big happy family that is Twitter again. You see, previously, everyone was distributed across a plethora of local microblogging services, but now with the demise of the two kingpins of the Chinese twitter clone world, Fanfou and Jiwai, everyone's just decided to collectively show the GFW their middle finger by signing up for a VPN and rejoining the conversation on Twitter.

Shanghaiist compiles some of the more popular features and news pieces we collected during the month of October. Take a gander back and enjoy!

Shanghaiist Halloween Costume Contest!

If you're like us, you love Halloween so much that you look forward to it for weeks, dreaming about stuffing yourself with candy and scaring every man, woman and small child in your freak-out radius. But if you're really like us, then you've probably thought a LOT about your costume, but haven't taken the time to travel all the way to Party Monster for your costume, or even log on to Taobao to look for one. Well, it's high time to get on it, because our annual Shanghaiist Halloween Party will have the definitive costume contest in all of Shanghai!

Shanghaiist Halloween Party: ZOMBIE WALK details!

Bwahaha! As Halloween slowly draws closer and closer like a serial killer in a horror movie, Shanghaiist is putting on the scariest garb we can find for our annual, super awesome Halloween Party. If you haven't read about it (or heard about it through the grapevine), we're partnering with Not Me to offer a night packed with horror, fright, and obviously, mayhem aplenty. After all, there's gonna be a costume contest, great music by MNO, R3, Baijiu Robot and Kidplastik, and of course, a mini cityscape for the crushing! So come, or you'll be haunted by it for the rest of your life.

Shanghaiist Scrabble: Next Tuesday!

Does the fact that China doesn't have scrabble get your goat? Does the fact that Craig Beevers won the UK's national Scrabble championship AGAIN and you know you could take him down bother you? Have you ever wanted to battle with the Shanghaiist editors in a match of lexicons?

Shanghaiist Scrabble Happy Hour @ Cotton's!

We've got a whole new bag of tricks to spice up our semi-monthly Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's. Well, technically, it's a bag of tiles- Scrabble tiles. After searching in vain for a game of Scrabble and only finding Maonopoly sets, we decided that we would maverick it and just make our own. And since we all know how witty and clever Shanghaiist readers are, we'd like to cordially invite you to join us next Tuesday, October 27 for the first monthly Shanghaiist Scrabble night!

Yes, Facebook is blocked over here, but if you have a way of circumnavigating the GFW (and honestly, most of you probably do now), you're probably on Facebook all day anyway. Now you can use your Facebook to comment on Shanghaiist posts! No more creating or signing into your Shanghaiist commenter account - just click connect with Facebook and comment away. Try it out, and while you're at it, join our Facebook group or become a fan!

Shanghaiist Halloween Party: Halloween Rampage!

Halloween is Shanghaiist's favorite holiday, by far. And with the spooky season approaching, we spend a lot of time thinking about whether Chinese vampires are more zombie than vampire, the mortifying merits of American style haunted houses and, of course, our annual halloween party. And like always, we're going to hold it down like a rickety door during a zombie attack.

Shanghaiist Happy Hour: Tonight!

With a mere forty-eight hours before the National Day celebration, we figured we'd throw a little surprise party of our own. Come down to Cotton's tonight and celebrate Shanghaiist's "we-hope-we-also-make-it-to-sixty" happy hour party! We're going to party like it's 1949, kick some traditional Chinese jams, and dance the night away with National Day drinking fervor. And like always, two for one drinks until ten!

Shanghaiist inadvertently helps identify amnesia-stricken man in U.S.

Holy cow! We're good for something (other than entertaining a couple of people at work each morning)! A Shanghaiist reader who was trying to contribute a tip saw another link there to this local news story from Seattle.

Please welcome this week's Guest Editor: Peijin Chen

Shanghaiist Editor Elaine Chow is currently on a much deserved vacation in the British Isles. Taking over the reins this is week, and making his triumphant return to the site, is Shanghaiist all-star Peijin Chen. If you want to see him in action, head over to Munchies or any number of Jing'an drinking establishments. Or you can just check out his older posts here. Welcome back, Peijin!

Londonist, feeling distinctly peckish, enjoyed a gourmet breakfast, the "best pizza outside of Italy", a Brick Lane curry and some bathtub-cooked salmon.

  • 5/12 Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's: Donate a prize, support earthquake relief

The next Shanghaiist Happy Hour at Cotton's on Xinhua Lu falls on the one-year anniversary of the devastating Sichuan earthquake, so we have decided to team with Hands On Chengdu, an organization committed to supporting the long term redevelopment of the areas affected by the earthquake for this Tuesday's gathering. Entry to the Happy Hour is free, but we'll be holding a lucky draw with some great donated prizes — all proceeds will go to Hands On Chengdu. Hands On Chengdu will have an informational booth at the happy hour and will be accepting donations and signing up volunteers on site.

Just like we promised, it was a beautiful night over at Cotton's Xinhua Road location. We drank, we chatted, and we gave away a free night at the Shangri-La (thanks to Ctrip.com) to one lucky winner. Be sure to come on out to our next happy hour on May 12!

Shanghaiist is judging you (on behalf of Ctrip)

Ctrip is hosting a Twitter competition to give away the sweet prize of weekend stay at the Portman Ritz Carlton’s Club Executive Suite (worth around 15,000RMB) and guess who's the guest judge? Everybody's favorite city blog - that's right, us (and don't you try to tell us differently). All you have to do to possibly win your stay at the Ritz is to answer this question from Ctrip: "If we gave you 1,000 RMB to spend, what would you do to show the world your appreciation to the Ritz Carlton for your amazing free stay?" as awesomely as possible. It can be funny, it can be touching, it can be plain weird - just Twitter Ctrip something 140 characters long that will make our eyes pop. (While you are at it, follow us on Twitter, too.)
