Midweek Music Preview: Neil Young, Escape Route and Triassic Park

Shanghaiist lists all the live music performances you might want to check out from now until Sunday this week. For fun things that aren't live music, take a peek at our Pencil This In (out every Monday!)

Interview: We're on a YACHT at YYT

Helping to kickstart the Halloween weekend is Portland, Oregon-based electronic dance/performance art duo YACHT. Originally the solo project of Jona Bechtolt (who also contributed his electronic wizardry to indie-pop group The Blow), YACHT grew by one in 2008, inducting Claire L. Evans as a full member, just in time to add her no nonsense vocals to their newest album See Mystery Lights.

Pencil This In: Shanghai Shenhua, Sultans of Swing, and Sandra Shen

Looks like an alliterative week ahead as everyone slowly stumbles into work again from the holiday. Ease back into the 'Hai with these events- from Bollywood and Berlin to swing and classical- that will keep your spirits up and your diverse musical cravings satisfied.

Dennis Lyxzén on life in Sweden's grooviest, socialist rock band: The (International) Noise Conspiracy

Tonight could have been the night that changed your life. The (International) Noise Conspiracy, "one of the wildest and most uncompromising live acts out there" flying in from Sweden, were to take total charge over the Yuyintang stage, but thanks to certain National Day-flavored machinations, it was cancelled.

Pencil This In: Pink Party, Electro shows, and Moon cakes for charity

If we're going to call a winner on this week, it's not the 60th anniversary on Thursday. It's Yuyintang, banging out three solid nights in a row of electro, punk, and more electro. The kind that looks legit and actually fun, too, not the crappy need-to-be-drunk-to-enjoy-this electro.

Global Battle of the Bands: It's a big ol' deal

Still ever-expanding in both contestants and renown, the Global Battle of the Bands invites you to celebrate its fifth year running. This time around, you get to put your vote in for which of Shanghai's band elite gets to participate in the nationals! Audience accounts for a quarter of the vote, but slipping a few drinks to the judges (including our very own beloved Shanghaiist editor) could cause ballots (and bodies) to sway.

In case you couldn't tell about how excited we got before they even came, we heart the Handsome Furs. We chatted with them before their show at Yuyintang, we photographed them rocking the stage (and found other online photosets too) and...

A massive, frantic crowd attended Yuyintang on Saturday night, catapulting Handsome Furs to Shanghai rock folklore. The Handsome Furs, composed of Dan Boeckner and his wife Alexei, make a neat Canadian Sid and Nancy. Their onstage charisma helped steam the room and fans, both old and new, went genuinely nuts. The music was fast, danceable, and loud, 70's punk ethos mixed with electronic loops and beats.

Interview: Handsome Furs

Lucky for us, Montreal based indie rock duo Handsome Furs is coming to Shanghai! Currently touring Asia, the band will be making a stop at everyone's favorite live music venue, Yuyintang, on Saturday, September 5.

Pencil This In: An acting workshop, a book fair, and a whole lotta networking

There's an abundance of networking events taking place this week, so whether you're old or young, speedy or slow, Canadian or Scottish, there's an opportunity for you to go forth and mingle.

Jeff Lang wowed the perpetually overcrowded Yuyintang with his folk/blues pickin' on Saturday. Using a mixture of pedals and a nifty food drum pad, Lang composes intricate and modern renditions of classic blues and traditional folk songs.

Interview: Jeff Lang, witty Australian folk and blues artist, hits the stage

We've been really looking forward to the Jeff Lang concert coming up tomorrow. Jeff Lang, an Australian folk, country and blues artist is a busy guy - besides playing innumerable instruments, he's somehow managed to release nearly one record each year since 1994.

Handsome Furs coming to YYT in September!

So we always get pretty excited about the bands Split Works brings over, but this has got us literally jumping up and down in our rooms in glee. The Handsome Furs, the indie rock duo project of Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his wife Alexei Perry, are going to hit up Yu Yin Tang on September 5th. Tickets will be 80RMB at the door, and 70RMB if you book it early through Taobao or by email. Opening acts are yet to be decided, but heck - we don't care who's up on stage with them... the Handsome Furs are coming. THE HANDSOME FURS ARE COMING!

Interview: Dragon Pizza's Yuki gets Night Fever

There is something goin down

UPDATE: Pinkberry have been forced to withdraw from Saturday night's line up at Yuyintang (their bassist's wife is seriously ill, we wish her well).

Interview: Grace Before Meals post-rocking Shanghai

Coming to us off a European tour, Australian band Grace Before Meals is set to play at Yu Yin Tang tonight at the Indie China Showcase, along with six other bands from around China.

Ugh. Summertime in Shanghai and livin' ain't all that easy. It's too darn hot one minute, sun showers the next. Luckily, Yuyintang have just installed a new air-con unit in the main room making it just that little bit less hot 'n' sticky. Live Bar? Well, they've got dirt cheap beers. And Soma Live? They seem to have melted away altogether for now. So here's where to get sweaty this weekend:

Music: Indie China Showcase at Yu Yin Tang

If you're still coherent after our July 4 Shanghaiist + Boxing Cat Brewery Party this Saturday, head over to Yu Yin Tang for their Indie China Showcase... because nothing follows burgers and beer on July 4th quite like some experimental post-indie math rock that makes you gaze at your shoes.

It seems wrong to put out a music-related post today without mentioning The King of Pop. When we received a text from a friend this morning asking if we'd heard about Michael Jackson, the initial thought was 'what's he done now?' It's a shame that for some generations, he will only be 'Wacko Jacko', a bizarre public freak show.

Interview: The seriously playful Miniless Records

With his closer involvement at the livehouse, we can also expect more Miniless artists performing there in the coming months adding another dimension to Shanghai's live music scene. We spoke to Hans about the label and his hopes for its future.

Last Friday at Yuyintang, Nosaj Thing shone in his beat-heavy live set laced with synth sounds and slaps amid an obvious underlying hip hop influence. He worked the Akai Mpd-32 controller, laptop and audio interface and yes the crowd lapped it up.

Interview: Nosaj Thing

Nosaj Thing, a.k.a. Jason Cheung, is a L.A.-based music producer whose geeky charm at first sight deceptively conceals his sinister and innovative musical agendas. At the age of 13, he molded his father's rudimentary PC that struggled with even Word documents into a Frankestein Intel Celeron home studio.

There's not exactly tumbleweed blowing through Shanghai's live music venues this weekend, but it's fair to say that compared to the steady steam of bands we've had in recent months, this weekend seems a quiet one. Of course, Torturing Nurse's NOIShanghai show will ensure it is anything but, while SOMA are bringing together some of the city's brightest young bands tonight.

Interview: Free the Robots clipping Cut&Paste

Live digital design competition Cut&Paste Shanghai will close with a big bang this Saturday May 23 in a live show co-hosted with Shanghai's very own FREE the WAX featuring LA music producer Chris Alfaro.

Last week was so packed with great live music that this weekend looks pretty tame by comparison. Not that the city's music venues are resting on their laurels for long. Once punk legends Sham 69 have finished up their set, you'll be just a few short days away from visits by AV Okubo in support of the excellent Ratatat, Gay Fish favourites Carsick Cars (who'll be bringing The Gar back to town too), and Casino Demon as they release their new album. Not bad. But first thing's first - this weekend:

Music lovers can get their weekend started early tonight with three great events going on around the city.

Interview: Life Journey treks here from Guangxi

Life Journey, a Modern Sky band hailing from Liuzhou, Guangxi, will play at the Yuyintang bar on Friday night. The band released their first self-titled CD last year, followed by a new four-song EP, “Waiting For You For Dinner.”

Decisions, decisions. Time was, choosing your live music for the night in Shanghai was easy: you headed to Yuyintang, occasionally the Dream Factory if there was something big on. Maybe, if you were into something a bit different, you'd head out to Live Bar. Generally speaking though, there was one stand out gig on a weekend and it was a pretty straightforward choice. Well, no more, if this weekend is anything to go by. We're not saying this is a brave new world yet, just that we hope it's a sign of things to come. If it is, picking your weekend gigs is going to get a lot tougher. But don't you dare go complaining that there's too many options.

Catch the ticket bird for the Antidote Electronic Music Festival

Yes, we know we just went through one festival, but we can't help getting a little psyched for the next one already.
